The Effect of Coating with Inorganic Film on the Strength of Etched Glass

Etched sheet glasses were. subjected to breaking strength tests by applying a concentrated load at the center. When they were coated with inorganic films (Sn0_2 or TiO_2), their breaking strength of over 150 kg/mm^2 was reduced to 〜60 kg/mm". The strength was considerably recovered by removing the film. This strength recovery was presumably caused by those activehydrogens in a nascent state that were liberated from the etching solution of zinc powder and hydrochloric acid used for removing the films. Discussions are also given about the deleterious effect of film coating on the strength of etched glass.
