The photoinduced discharge characteristics (PIDC) of amorphous selenium layers with either positive or negative charging are found to be well described by a theoretical model which takes into account the field-controlled photogeneration and the bulk trapping of charge carriers. The observation of the surface charge density as a function of the number of incident photons per unit area shows that the PIDC with positive charging are independent of the thickness of the layer. The unit range of the electron is determined to be 1.4×10^<-8>cm^2/V by a new Hecht-type analysis. Further, a useful method is developed for measuring the capacitance of photoconductive layers.
