The figures of merit (Q), critical temperatures for stress-freezing and transition temperatures (T_g) have been determined in the Araldite hardener specimens (AY 103 plasticised and AY 105 unmodified) of CIBA (India), Ltd., with varying content of the hardener HY 951, cured at different temperatures, by the photo-elastic method. The best compositions with regard to photo-elastic studies and thermal insulation problems are pointed out. Q is observed to increase with the decrease of cure temperature. T_g is shown to increase more in AY 105 than in AY 103 with the increase of cure temperature. These effects are attributed to the dependence of degree of cross-linkage on cure temperature and the action of the plasticiser. AY 105 and AY 103 are suggested as more suitable for two and three dimensional photo-elastic studies respectively by comparing the Q values of these materials with the values of the well known classical photoelastic materials and some epoxy resins available in literature.
