Use of a He-Cd II laser with sectioned hollow cathodes was suggested for obtaining uniform negative glow discharge. The laser was constructed of metal and ceramics. Some inherent problems of a hollow cathode metal vapor laser, such as the lack of uniformity, metal vapor diffusion loss, short circuit between cathode and anode and contamination coating of Brewster's angle window, were removed and stable cw laser oscillations at 8878 Å, 8531 Å, 8067 Å, 7284 Å, 7237 Å, 6360 Å, 5378 Å and 5337 Å, besides 4416 Å, were obtained. To study the excitation mechanism, the output power characteristics of these laser lines were measured in simultaneous oscillation at some wavelengths. From the measured data and energy levels, it was suggested that the electron collision process played an important role in the excitation mechanism as well as the charge transfer process and cascade transition process.
