Magnetization curves have been measured on various single crystals of rare-earth orthoferrites. As crystal perfection increases, the coercive force _IH_c increases, but its dependence on the amplitude of an applied field decreases. Two origins of _IH_c are considered to account for the observation. One is the critical field to expand a domain at a "seed". The other is the nucleation field, H_D, at defects like dislocation. It is concluded that the highest observed value of 1000 Oe results from H_D. It has been also observed that many magnetization curves are asymmetric. The origin of the asymmetry is attributed to the existence of antiferromagnetic parts on the crystal surface.
