The chemical compositions of the oxide scale and the underlying metal on the surfaces of CoNiCr (60/20/20) alloy and HDA 8188 alloy (cobalt-base superalloy) were analysed by X-ray fluorescence after oxidation in air for 5 hours at 1100℃ or 1000℃. Special attention was paid to lanthanum, which plays an important role in the remarkable increase of oxidation resistance. The analysis of this element in alloys containing low lanthanum concentrations was carried out by its L_αX-ray emission spectrum. The results on the distribution of each element in the oxide layers were related to the crystal structure of several oxide phases examined by X-ray and electron diffraction.
