Mossbauer scattering was effectively used for identification of iron oxides formed on steel surface. The measurement of the internal magnetic field of ^<57>Fe showed that the intermediate compound produced in the process of oxidation of the steel surface was Fe_3O_4, not γ-Fe_2O_3. It is evident that compounds having almost the same lattice constants and a Mossbauer nuclide can be discriminated again from one another by means of Mossbauer scattering.
