The effects of surface orientation on the tensile strength of plates of iron single crystal having the tensile axis direction [110] are investigated in the thickness range 12-340μm, and in the temperature range -l20℃-200℃. In plates thinner than 30μm, (001) plates are stronger than (11^^-0) plates. The surface orientation dependence of the strength becomes more pronounced as the thickness and temperature decrease. The strength of plates thicker than 30μm does not depend on the orientation of the plate surface. The rate of increase of the strength with decreasing temperature is the same in the 15μm thick (001) plate as that in thicker plates. The temperature dependence of the strength is smaller in the 15μm thick (11^^-0) plate than in thicker plates.
