A slow time-to-amplitude converter is fabricated for the time interval measurements of self-quenching type GM and gas-flow counters. With this converter, the resolving times of counters are analyzed. The resolving time has the peak value at the beginning of the GM-threshold voltage and decreases at the higher supplied voltage. The approximate position of the ion sheath of the normal discharge at which the field strength of a counter recovers to the GM-threshold is also determined by comparing the resolving time with the calculated velocity of the ton sheath. The resolving time is proportional to the pulse amplitude at low supplied voltages and is nearly constantat higher voltages. These phenomena can be explained by the recovery curves of the field strength near the center wire. Another application of the coverter is also suggested.
