Structural and Dielectric Studies of Ferroelectric K_3Li_2(Ta_xNb_<1-x>)_5O_<15>

X-ray, dielectric and optical studies on single crystals of the ferroelectric K_3Li_2(Ta_xNb_<1-x>)_5O_<15> (0≦x≦1, designated KLTN) were carried out and the effect of the substitution of Ta ions for Nb in K_3Li_2Nb_5O_<15> on the crystal structure and ferroelectric properties was investigated. As x is increased from 0 to 1 in KLTN, the lattice constant c decreases from 4.039 to 3.931Å and the Curie temperature from 480℃ to -266℃ while the ferroelectric polar axis remains parallel to [001]. A discontinuous point is observed in those variations at approximately 0.55. At room temrerature KLTN crystal is tetragonal for x〓0.55 but orthorhombic for x〓0.55, and has a "completely filled" tungsten bronze type structure for x=1, that is, for K_3Li_2Ta_5O_<15>. High temperature X-ray and optical studies showed that the orthorhombic KLTN transforms into tetragonal phase at about 250℃, and also revealed an interesting thermal behavior in structure of the crystal. The relation between structure and ferroelectric properties of the KLTN is discussed.
