In order to obtain a fast and intense flash, some other flash apparatus has been constructed, and its electrical and optical characteristics have been studied. Two flash tubes of which working voltages were up to 10 and 20kV, respectively, were offered. Both of them are of the so-called tubular pinch discharge type. When argon was used as a filling gas, the tubular pinch effect was observed at initial pressures less than a few torr for the applied voltages mentioned above. The duration time of flash strongly depends upon the gas pressure and applied voltage in accordance with the snow-plow theory. The shortest duration time obtained was 3.5 μsec for the 20kV-discharge at 0.5 torr. The radiant energy was measured by three different methods. The total optical energy emerging from single flash was estimated to be around 1600 Joules for the input electrical energy of 2500 Joules.
