The problem of competition between {110}<001> slip and {110}<111> or {112}<111> slip in bcc metals has been analyzed using crystal plasticity theory. It is concluded that {110}<<111> slip will occur in preference to {110}<001> if the critical resolved shear stress ratio, τ{110}<001>/τ{110}<111> exceeds 1.732; and that {112}<111> slip will be preferred to {110} <001> If the ratio τ{110}<001>/τ{112}<111> exceeds 2. These values are not extremely large as implied by the recent work of Takeuchi, who attempted, but failed, to enforce {110}<001> slip by plane strain compression of a Fe-2%V crystal in the (110)[110] orientation.
