Calculations are made on velocities and damping coefficients of longitudinal and transverse ultrasonic waves in a visco-elastic body under initial stress. Plots of wave-velocities and damping coefficients versus wave-frequency are given. Phase-differences between two differently polarized transverse waves are also calculated. For small extrashearing rigidity and small initial stresses, the phase-difference is proportional to the product of wave-frequency and the difference in initial stresses. Briefly mentioned is the so-called acousto-viscoelastic method for measuring stress, which is quite analogous to photo-elastic one.
