A rotating mirror driven by a current pulse is combined with a multi-channel spectrometer to enable a rapid scanning of spectra. The speed and range of its wavelength scan are 0.6Å/μsec and 80Å respectively, using a spectrometer of dispersion of about 5Å/mm. The rotating mirror effectively changes the position of the virtual entrance slit, and a wave-length scanning can be done at the exit slits which are fixed on the Rowland circle. The current pulse which drives the rotating mirror can be triggered from, and so the scanning can be synchronized with, the phenomenon to be observed. A device which gives a wave-length scale on an oscilloscope trace of the scanned spectrum is also included.
