The Gaussian mode expression of electromagnetic waves in a uniaxial medium is formulated for the purpose of understanding the properties of an optical resonator containing such a medium. The ordinary ray case is the same as in the isotropic medium, therefore, the extraordinary ray case is the primary topic of this paper. From this formulation a derivation of the F matrix in a uniaxial medium is obtained. Fabry-Perot resonators completely or partially filled with the uniaxial medium are considered, and the use of a spheroidal or a displaced spherical mirror is shown to be desirable in the extraordinary wave case.
