Electro-optical properties of two nematic liquid-crystal compounds, p-cyanobenzal-p'-anisidine and p-cyanobenzal-p'-phenetidine, are investigated. The compounds have the electro-optical properties which are different from those found in p-azoxyanisole and anisylidene-p-aminophenylacetate. These properties are the characteristics of a nematic liquid-crystal compound whose molecular dipole moment lies nearly along its long molecular axis. When a voltage is switched on or off, the transmitted-light intensity through the nematic film in the direction parallel to the applied electric field oscillates in a certain short duration. The oscillating phenomenon is independent of the frequency of the applied electric field. It is found that the spontanaeous alignment parallel to the surface by wall effects is important for interpreting the oscillating phenomenon of the nematic liquid-crystal films. An interpretation of the result is suggested.
