The spatial distributions of energy dissipation of electrons in beryllium, aluminum, copper, silver and lead were obtained experimentally for well collimated electron beam of a few MeV generated from a Van de Graaff accelerator. Comparing with the Spencer theory, it is found that our experiment and the theory are generally in agreement except in shallow and in very deep penetration. The discrepancies between the present experiments and the theory might be attributable to neglecting the effects of the secondary electron and of electron straggling in the theory.
