JNR decided in 1960 to dismantle the rack rail which was installed on the extremely steep section between Yokokawa and well-known resort Karuizawa of Shin-etu main line and depend on ordinal adhesion drive to extend carrying capacity of this line. 2 high adhesive type locomotives were newly designed and constructed. As far as adhesion quality is concerned these new type locomotives showed sufficient capacity and therefore this planning seems to be completed without any trouble. But in preceding test run before business operation, unexpected accidents took place. That is, violent shock wave caused by emergency brake action induce break down of flight cars automatic coupler or floating derailment of electric car train and other various troubles. A large number of on-line test were repeated to solve these problems. In addition, by means of digital computer aided simulation, detail behavior of total train was analyzed where practical figure of long train driven on steep gradient is transferred numerically on computer. The computed output data was very near to that of on-line test results. Thus useful and suggestive information were read from there. Business operation of this line has started at July 1963 according to original schedule. Owing to many efforts to overcome these problems, this line has been operated entirely no trouble thereafter, in spite of many difficulties during test running stage.
