The Mega-Float is one of the examples of a pontoon type floating structure called as a very large floating structure the main purpose of which is a floating airport. The Mega-Float Project is a kind of the National Project conducted by the Japanese Government in order to investigate the feasibility study of a floating airport available for a Jambo jet. The Technological Research Association of the Mega-Float was established in 1995 and they carried out the two continuous three-year project in which they constructed 300m long and 1000m long prototype models. Comparing with the horizontal dimension, the depth of the Mega-Float is so small such as only 1m at most that the behavior of the structure is similar to a kind of membrane for which the interaction of the structure deformation and hydrodynamics play important roles, that is, so called hydroelasticity is the dominant characteristics. The author describes the hydrodynamic forces on a Mega-Float, the behavior of the Mega-Float in waves, wave loads, external forces on the mooring system and load on a Mega-Float due to a sea-shock. They concluded that a Mega-Float is feasible as a floating airport.
