The free-surface flow around a modern container ship, which is of practical importance for shipbuilding industry in Japan, is numerically simulated and analyzed. An unstructured grid flow solver is employed, in which RANS equations are solved for incompressible viscous flows. The artificial compressibility is introduced in the continuity equation and cell-centered FVM on unstructured grid is used for spatial discretization. Several types of grids made of hexahedrons, prisms, pyramids, and tetrahedrons are associable with the present solver. The Sparlart and Allmaras one-equation turbulence model is employed for the Reynolds stress. A free-surface capturing method using a level set function is used for free-surface flow simulations. The computational results are validated against experimental data obtained by towing tank experiments. The validation results show that the present flow solver can predict various characteristics of the free-surface flow around delicate geometry such as a container ship at a reasonable level of errors.
