Open-channel flow at a backstep displays a complicated flow feature as it involves a free water surface easily deformed by the pressure field in the separation zone. The flow changes from subcritical to supercritical flows at the backstep section and a hydraulic jump is created downstream of it when a tail water depth is favorably controlled. The flow becomes much more complicated in the case a cavity is installed at the backstep section for the purpose of energy dissipation. In this study, the velocity field was measured in detail by the particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) technique for various aspect ratios of the cavity. It was made clear that the energy dissipation is closely related to turbulence in the cavity and periodic oscillation of a hydraulic jump occurs for a specific aspect ratio of the cavity.
