In our country, the traditional wooden frames seen in temples and shrines have existed as an important part of our culture from ancient days, and it is sure that they have composed the various and unique style of the architectural culture themselves. However, the mechanism of construction method in these traditional wooden frames is quite difficult to analyze and has remained unclear for long time because of the structural uniqueness and complexity. Today, it is becoming a major movement to set a high value on the importance to figure out how the mechanism works, in order to establish the definite method for the preservation, restoration and earthquake-reinforcement of these traditional assets as our cultural properties. This study focuses on column rocking resistance that is the principal earthquake-proof element of traditional wooden frames. As a result of the three-dimensional examination considering an influence caused by an earthquake, the column rocking resistance has been found to show the great variations in its characteristic. Furthermore, it has been confirmed by the full-scale vibration tests that "kumimono", one of the characteristic elements of the traditional frames, slants to the completely opposite direction from the inclination of the columns.
