A series of investigations into the cracked damages in deck plating of refrigerated cargo carriers have been carried out from view point of both material characteristics of the steels and thermal stresses caused in the deck plating. Since it is considered that initiation of these cracks is usually due to a notch at welded joint of the minor structural members, the problem left is to find out the main causes of the brittle crack propagation in the deck plating. Thus, the material tests including V-charpy test, pressed notch impact test and double tension test have been conducted on the damaged steels, and their results have shown that the notch toughness of the steels is not particularly inferior to that of the ordinary steel used in ship structures. Then experimental measurement has been made on the temperature distributions as well as on the thermal strains in deck plating, the results of which have indicated a fact that fairly high tensile thermal stresses are observed when quick freezing room is cooled down to ordinary use.Theoretical analysis on the thermal stresses have also been made, and the result has shown a similar stress distribution pattern to that of the measured ones.
