The strength of the primary supporing members of a tanker arranged transversely and longitudinaly to reinforce the bottom or side panel construction can be estimated with reasonable accuracy by substituting simplified two-dimentinal cross-girder system for these primary supporting members. However, in the calculation of the deflection of these girders having small span-depth ratio, the effect of shear deformation of the web plate must be taken into consideration. The author made a practical calculation of typical cross-girder systems adopted for the bottom panel in centre or inner tanks and also for the side shell and longitudinal bulkhead panels in wing tanks of longitudinaly framed mammoth tankers, and as a result obtained, the supporting effect of longitudinal girders for the loaded transverse girders when the shear deflection of both girders is taken into account. The author also developed a calculation method considered useful for the examination of the strength or for the design of such construction. On the other hand, in view of the recent tendency forward increasing the maximum allowable length of cargo tanks, the author has studied on an efficient structural arrangement for bottom panel in centre tanks when their length is increased, and indicated that a bottom construction consisting of middle transverse with the sectional area of web plate greater by about 20% than that of end transverses is more efficient than the ordinary bottom construction with three transverses of equal scantlings.
