• There seem to exist some different opinions among several classification societies of shipping as for the stress concentration at the hatch corner together with the reinforcement thereto. In order to provide some data necessary for clarifying the problem, the author made a series of experiments on the stress concentration for various radii of hatch corners in 9 sister ships. Measurements were carried out when the vessels were launched and records of stress arising at the hatch corner and main deck were taken continuously by the strain meter.The major factor influencing the stress concentration has been found to be the value of radious at the hatch corner in correlation with the breadth of the hatch, and conventional reinforcement by inserting thicker plate at the hatch corner seems to have little contribution to this problem.In this paper, the author reports the results of these experiments.
