The efficient and effective design of complex engineering structures, such as marine vessels, presents the designer with a considerable challenge. This challenge is due to a large number of coupled decisions, which are required to be made concurrently. To assist designers in making better decisions, we call for a shift from the traditional sequential design spiral and basis-ship philosophy towards a concurrent approach to design.
