Here by a "Compount Beam" it is meant a "Beam consisting of upper and lower flange members and terminal struts stiff-jointed with the former" or a "Rahmen, " either with or without intermediate struts. The intermediate struts may either be stiff-jointed or pin-jointed with the flange members. This paper consists of two chapters. In Chapter I, the "Strength of Compound Beams" is investigated. The investigation is based on the Principle of Continuity. In cases, however, where it is found convenient to do so, deflection equations may be used instead of equations obtained in accordance with the said principle. "Deflection Equation" is an equation obtained by equating the deflection formulae for the junction points at each end of an intermediate strut. The modulus of resistance of the cross section of compound beams is specially considered. In Chapter II, the "Strength of Hold Cofferdams" is considered. At first, the results of Dr. Dahlmann's Experiments are investigated in accordance with the proposed method of the solution of the strength of compound beams. Next some examples of the construction of assumed cofferdams are considered on the same bases.
