Sea-side operations between containerships and wharf apron in container terminals are usually well-organized based upon the scheme of unloading/loading in before-hand. Accordingly, it is relatively easy to estimate the required number of container-handling equipment to support quay-side container-cranes. On the other hand, land-side operations for receiving/delivering of containers to/from yards through gates are very difficult to make the scheme in before-hand, as the operations are strongly affected by factors which are generally out of control to terminal operators, such as shippers'/consignees' intentions, conditions of road-transport, etc.. Accordingly, the estimate on the required number of handling equipment to perform the operations is very difficult in general. This point is analysed based upon the queueing methods for several cases in combinations of arrival patterns of road-hauliers' trucks with the index of accessibility of containers stacked in yards, for both operations using straddle-carriers and rubber-tyred-gantries, in the paper. As the result of analysis, recommendable required number of container-handling equipment is summarised in Table 1.
