Torsional strength of a container ship with extremely large hatch openings is a very important problem for structural design of these types of ships, and recently the active researches have been initiated in many countries a11 over the world. Several reports have already been published in this country. In order to be paralleled with the full-scale torsional testing of a newly-built container ship, overall finite element analysis on torsional strength of the same ship has recently been carried out. The comparative study on the numerical results and test data has duly proved the high potentialities of the finite element methods in ship structural analysis.
