• The analysis by the finite element method generally requires a large amount of input data, and a considerable amount of computer time to obtain stiffeness matrices. The "standard unit method," described in this paper, is introduced in order to remove those difficulties. In this method, informations about joints and elements, are not necessary. Each of unit stiffeness matrices is calculated directly by the simple addition of partial stiffeness matrices which are obtained, in advance, in connection with the standard unit. In this paper, examples are described about the analysis of local strength of the ship, using the "standard unit method."
