10. HICAS: Complete Shipbuilding Information Processing System Based on a Veritable Data Base

The present paper reports the functions and the processes of development of an elaborate system, named HICAS, the core being the veritable data base. This data base which conforms to a particular application is constructed on the basis of a set of routines common to the individual data bases. The application systems that have already been started are; Hydrostatics and related calculations Hull structure design: for example, decks, shell, bulkheads, transverses, longitudinal etc., these data are transferred successively to the NC system. Piping design: for example, joint positioning, pipe piece breakdown, pipe piece drawing making, NC bending data generation etc. The storage, addition, correction, alteration or deletion of data is carried out by issuing a special command corresponding to the designer's intention. hardware configuration is given in chapter, 3, they are selected out of existing products that seem to be fit for the respective ends. Views in regard to the future effectiveness of this system are put forth in chapter 6.
