Experimental studies were carried out in 14 series of fillet welded joints to examine the influence of the flank angle and the undercut at weld bead toe on the fatigue strength. Non-10ad-carrying cruciform and tee fillet welded joints were tested and life reduction due to the undercut was quantitatively assessed. It was also found that the flank angle had a little influence on the fatigue strength. The lives of specimens to failure were analyzed based on the stress concentration factors at the weld bead toe. The life before visible crack initiation was evaluated by calculating the elastic stress cycle at the weld bead toe and the crack growth was estimated through Paris' law. The specimen life to failure was estimated as the sum of these two lives and was compared with results obtained in tests. It was confirmed that this procedure gives the fatigue life of fillet weld specimen with sufficient accuracy. In addition to 14 undercut series of tests, 40 other test results having various fillet shapes were also analyzed applying the estimation. The equivalent fatigue strength of each specimen was calculated from each failure life data of specimen referring to the estimated S・N relations. The influence of the undercut depth and the effect of the toe-machining were quantitatively discussed. This led to the proposition of the acceptance criteria for the allowable undercut depth of 0.3mm for the special members, of 0.5mm for the primary members and of 0.8mm for the secondary members of offshore structures.
