The thrust force on electromagnetic propulsion ship is generated by Lorentz force due to interaction of the magnetic field and electric current in sea water, and application of superconducting magnets is proposed in order to obtain a stronger magnetic field. Initiated by the Ship and Ocean Foundation in 1985, the research and development have been applied to superconducting coils, electrodes, liquid helium refrigerators, hull form, etc. and a full scale experimental ship is now under construction, on which the thrusters of superconducting electromagnetic propulsion are installed. In this paper, the initial design of the ship, the principle of the propulsion, main technical points of the thruster and the propulsion system of the ship are described including their test results etc.
