This paper describes the process planning expert system. The automated process planning is a combination of the huge database representing the ship designed and the knowledge base for the planning. The recent AI technology seems able to provide a powerful methodology to realize the system. The present system is based on the discussion in the previous paper by the present authors and it has three principal features, that is; (1) Entity and Relationship representation of the parts and the structure to be constructed and production by the Role and Floor, (2) the introduction of the subprocess which corresponds with the blocks and subassembly of the ship, and (3) the distributed expert system architecture. The prototype system was implemented in the Smalltalk-80 environment taking advantage of the object oriented data structure and the graphical interface. The system was exemplified by the simplified midship structure made of the double bottom, the side shell and the deck. The system was able to provide the reasonable process plan and ideas used in the system were proven very effective and practical.
