A new rational theory is presented for predicting the effects of side-wall interference on the hydrodynamic forces on a ship advancing in waves generated in a parallel-sided waterway. The radiation problem is solved by extending Newman's unified slender-ship theory. Haskind-Newman's reciprocity relation is applied to calculate wave-exciting forces and ship motions only with the radiation-problem solution. The theory is validated by experiments at zero and nonzero forward speeds and independent numerical solutions at zero speed by a 3-D panel method. New diagrams for checking the side-wall interference are also provided.
