16. Ultimate and Fatigue Strength of Rack Tooth for Leg Fixing Device of Jackup Rigs

This paper presents the results of the studies on the strength of racks for a leg fixing device of jackup rigs. The ultimate strength and the fatigue strength of mutually contacting rack teeth are examined by performing model tests and elasto-plastic finite element analyses on the contact problem. Results of the ultimate strength study on the racks show that the ultimate strength of rack teeth can be estimated by a simple formula. It is also shown from the results of the fatigue strength study on the racks that the effect of friction on the tooth fillet strain is not negligible and that the fatigue crack initiation life can be well predicted by the equation proposed by Iida et al.
