Hot cracking frequently occurs during solidification stage in an initial bead of butt-welded joints. In order to finding out mechanical behavior of such welded joints especially within solidification temperature range, analytical models are developed for calculating temperatures, stresses and strains resulting from welding. Numerical calculations were carried out for the models simulated to the initial pass of butt-welded joints using the finite element method for temperature analysis and the boundary element method for thermal elasto-plastic analysis. Calculated values of the maximum strain rate at the weld centerline immediately after commencement of solidification were comparable to those obtained from the Trans-varestraint test. The cooling rate at the weld toe during solidification is so fast that a considerable amount of tensile plastic strains is induced suddenly in this part and the maximum strain rate amounts to the order of 10^<-3>/sec. It may be suggested that an effective way to prevent hot cracking is to reduce the cooling rate at the weld toe during the final stage of solidification.
