Some Problems on the information to be included in the manoeuvring booklet and on the manoeuvring standard have been discussed at the Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Equipment of International Maritime Organization. At the same time, the development of prediction method for ship maneuverability at the initial stage of design will be expected. With these points as background, one of the authors has already proposed the calculation method for hydrodynamic interaction forces between ships in meeting and passing conditions in narrow waterways. By using this calculation method, this paper examines hydrodynamic forces acting on a ship in the proximity of nonuniform bank wall such as breakwater and wedge-shaped bank, furthermore the manoeuvring motion of ship including the effect of this bank wall is discussed. As the result, the hydrodynamic forces on the ship are significantly affected especially by the wedge-shaped bank. The calculation and simulation methods used in this paper will be useful for prediction of ship manoeuvrability at the initial stage of design, for automatic control system of a ship in restricted water, for discussion of marine traffic control system and for construction of harbor or canal.
