In this paper roll characteristics of small fishing vessels in Japan are investigated experimentally and theoretically. In the second chapter experimental results of roll dampings of four kinds of hull forms demonstrate that the roll damping of a small vessel is significantly sensitive to the hull form, the load condition and the roll-axis height. Free-rolling tests of full-scale ships are also carried out to investigate the scale effect of the roll damping. Significance of the viscous effects on the sway damping and the coupling dampings as well as on the roll damping is confirmed experimentally even in the motion of moderate amplitude. In the third chapter a numerical simulation method for nonlinear coupled lateral motions is proposed to make a good prediction of motions of a small vessel in waves. In the fourth and fifth chapters the effects of over-hung deck, hard-chine and skeg on the roll motion and the dampings are investigated in detail.
