The author developed an entirely new ship's autopilot system in 1977, which was called by AR autopilot. Many sea tests of his system has been carried out since the first success. The aims of this paper are to evaluate this system from view point of course keeping quality and to analyse the steering method, in comparison with the conventional and the manual steering. All analysis will be performed by using the actual data in the full-scaled model tests at sea and by applying a new statistical model to analyse the data.
