For the purpose of putting Highly Skewed Propellers (HSP) to practical use for marchant ships such theoretical methods were developed as a simplified method to calculate wake adapted skew distribution with which vibratory propeller forces would be reduced greatly, a practical method for obtaining skew angle required to hold vibration within tolerable limit at initial design stage, and a numerical method for non-linear steady propeller lifting surface by which HSP superior in propulsive efficiency would be obtained. 72°HSP was designed for a container ship using these methods. Results of model tests demonstrated that propulsive efficiency was same, cavitation characteristics were a little better, and propeller-induced fluctuating pressure reduced to 12% in comparing the 72°HSP with Conventional Propeller (CP). Further, it was confirmed from results of model tests that HSP was inferior to CP in astern thrust and that in comparison with CP maximum value and change ratio of the sectional area of cavity on 72° HSP's back were smaller in wake.
