This paper is a combined one of separately published five papers. Part one is on the experimental investigation of the cruising qualities, where the reason of the study on the hydrodynamic characteristics of circular type submarine was discussed at first from the bionics point of view, and to have an insight into the cruising qualities of that form, two type of series were selected and tested in the towing tank, namely, the resistance test on the sixteen models and the self-propulsion test on one model were conducted, then rough comparisons of the cruising qualities of this type of under-water vehicle with those of other type of ships were made by means of displacement-drag ratio and specific resistance concepts. Part two is on the experimental investigation of the gliding qualities, where at first the indices to specify the gliding phenomenon of a submerged vehicle were introduced from the equation of motion of a submarine, then the gliding qualities of the circular type submarine were discussed using the indices and the data obtained from the experiments conducted at the towing tank on the sixteen series models. Part three is on the inherent stability of the longitudinal motion, where at first the hydrodynamic coefficients of the equation of motion of the sixteen series models of this type of ship were obtained experimentally by forced oscillation method in a towing tank, then the relationships between ship forms and the inherent stability of the longitudinal motion at fully submerged condition were clarified by use of the concept of the classical control theory. Part four is on the maneuverability in the horizontal plane, where the horizontal motion of a typical circular type submarine with several rudder configurations was studied by use of transfer function concept. Part five is on the maneuverability in the longitudinal plane, where the longitudinal motion of a typical circular type submarine equipped with flap type control plane configurations were investigated by use of control plane effectiveness derivatives obtained from three-component test in a towing tank, and maneuverability indices deducted from the transfer functions.
