A procedure to predict the effective wake distribution, which is important for the design of a wake-adapted propeller and for the calculation of propeller vibratory forces, is presented for an axisymmetric flow. The prediction is made by means of streamline tracing under the assumptions that the fluid is inviscid and the propeller-induced velocity field is irrotational. For practical convenience, the interaction of a propeller and boundary layer around stern is not considered. The velocity measurements of the flow in front of a working' propeller in open-water and in wake field of a body of revolution were carried out in the towing tank by use of 5-hole pitot probe. The propeller was arranged away from the body of revolution enough to avoid the interaction between them, A close agreement is obtained between measured and predicted velocity profiles upstream of a propeller. It is found that the rate of the contraction of the nominal wake varies in radial direction when the propeller is operating. The circulation distribution of the propeller in radial direction for the predicted effective wake distribution is slightly changed from that for the nominal wake distribution.
