Current supercomputers need a number of LSIs due to its limited integration density. Therefore, to reduce the processing time, it is necessary not only to improve LSI performance itself but also to reduce wiring delays between LSIs. Bipolar (ECL) technology used to be the best and the only one choice for supercomputers because of its high switching speed. Recently, another device technologies such as GaAs, CMOS also have had a good progress in terms of gate speed, integration density and power consumption. At present, these device technologies are used to meet with each characteristic in various class of supercomputers and each technology has a possibility of being used for high performance supercomputers in the future.
