Protection of superconducting coils against coil burn-out during a coil quench is a very necessary performance aspect of large fusion devices. In the protection system of the Large Helical Device, a new current-breaking circuit has been implemented. This breaking circuit enables the protection system to transfer a high dc current of 30kA from a power supply to a dump resistor during a coil quench. The breaking circuit is composed of a conventional ac vacuum breaker, disconnectors, power fuse(s), and diodes. Its features include simple configuration and excellent cost performance and reliability since that this circuit needs no large capacitor bank which is an essential part in a conventional dc breaker system including VCB. Tests have demonstrated successful actions to high dc currents up to 32 kA. Confidence tests have been achieved up to 400 shots without any failure of the Large Helical Device's poloidal power supplies.
