A new hybrid sensor for long period measurements is developed and demonstrated experimentally. The hybrid sensor is consisted from two sensing parts. One is a mechanical sensor for frequencies higher than 0.1 Hz, which is a new type of magnetic sensor and employs electromagnetic force measurement principle. The other is a conventional inductive magnetic probe for higher frequency measurements. This new hybrid sensor has two advantages. First, it does not produce a zero level drift because there is no integrator for dc component measurements, and secondly, it is tolerant of high neutron fluxes because there are no organic materials or semiconductors in use. The hybrid sensor was tested in a steady magnetic field. The results showed that it provides accurate measurements within one percent error for rated output. The hybrid sensor also meets the magnetic diagnostic requirements of the next generation long-pulse fusion devices for the magnetic confinement of thermonuclear plasmas.
