To allow for quick, precise current control of the poloidal field power supply during the tokamak fusion experiment (JT-60), thyristor converters were adopted. The thyristors in these converters have a rating of 4000V-3000A and are connected 2 in a series, 7 parallel connections per arm. In consideration of the repetitive operation, a natural air cooling system was also adopted. This paper presents the following: (1) characteristics of the power device and progress of the capabilities of thyristors; (2) theory of the rectifier circuit: (3) design of the thyristor converter for the JT-60 poloidal field power supply; and (4) future trends for power converters for the tokamak fusion experiment.
