Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) , on which research began in the 1970's, can be expected to have an efficiency higher than 90%. Along with the significant progress of superconducting magnet and large scale inverter technologies, SMES has attracted special interest. Various scales of SMES systems from 1GWh class to 1kWh class can be used to different purposes. In SMES, there are many technical problems to solve regarding components such as superconducting coil, helium cooling system, persistent current switch and inverter/converter system. R&D activities related to these are being supported by electrical power companies and the Japanese government. Here, the principle and features of SMES systems, technical problems and status of their solutions are presented.
