Graphite and Carbon materials are widely used as plasma facing components for major fusion devices such as JET, JT-60 and TFTR, because of their low Z and good high temperature characteristics. However, for their application i,n the next generation fusion machines such as ITER, a comprehensive evaluation has to be undertaken, including vacuum properties, thermal shock resisitance, erosion, hydrogen recycling, retention of tritium and effects of 14MeV neutron irradiation. The present status of the data base for each item is presented and discussed on the basis of engineering, physics and chemsitry of carbon(graphite). And future subjects necessary for research and development of fusion graphites or carbon materials are suggested.
