To obtain basic knowledge for designing comfortable brassieres, the relationship between sensory evaluation and clothing pressure was investigated in 193 young Japanese women. Five types of brassieres (1/2 cup, 3/4 cup, full-cup, full-cup non-wire and sports types) were tested. Using the factor analysis technique, 6 factors with the cumulative contribution rate of 70.3% were extracted. Among those 6 factors, a dynamic functional factor was found to be the most contributory to wearing comfort of brassieres. Clothing pressure was measured at 29 points on the breast covered not only by the cup part but also by the frame part of brassieres in 11 subjects. The clothing pressure at the lower and lateral parts varied greatly according to the brassiere type. The dynamic function factor was influenced by the stability of brassieres which was closely related with the clothing pressure at the lower part of the cup.
